Part of
Stockholm Studies in Romance Languages (SSIRL) (ISSN 2002-0724) is a peer-reviewed series of monographs and edited volumes published by Stockholm University Press. SSIRL strives to provide a broad forum for research on Romance Languages of all periods, including both linguistics and literature. In terms of subjects and methods, the orientation is wide: language structure, variation and meaning, spoken and written genres as well as literary scholarship in a broad sense. It is the ambition of SSIRL to place equally high demands on the academic quality of the manuscripts it accepts as those applied by refereed international journals and academic publishers of a similar orientation.
This book is aimed at researchers, students, and practitioners interested in how the voices of experts have been conveyed in the public sphere during the early waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond controversies over the selection of these experts by governments or the media, the book draws on methodologies from discourse analysis, media studies, political science, sociology, and social psychology to compare the role that experts played in justifying unpopular political decisions. Several configurations have emerged, including politically contested systems with medical heroes, bureaucratized systems with a super-reference expert, or more collegiate forms of committees tasked with providing political leaders with the necessary reports to justify political decisions.

Léxico y semántica es un libro de 10 capítulos que exploran el léxico y sus vertebraciones semánticas desde varias perspectivas.
El léxico es el armazón de la lengua. Constituye los ladrillos con los cuales se construyen las oraciones, llamadas en las últimas décadas enunciados, desde los enfoques pragmáticos.
La lengua es un constructo formado por varias unidades como si fuera una pared de piedra. Sin embargo, debe tenerse en cuenta que la heterogeneidad y el carácter multiforme es más propio de los constructos lingüísticos que de las construcciones arquitectónicas. Hasta ahora no se pueden formalizar del todo matemáticamente. En ambos casos se trata de unidades, ladrillos y piedras que se ponen unas junto a otras aplicando unas reglas químicas y físicas. Eso es morfológicas y sintácticas para dar un aspecto general significativo. Tanto en un caso como en otro hay elementos que unen cada pieza a otra y las cementan: las preposiciones, conjunciones y todo tipo de marcadores del discurso entran en esta tipología. Ahora bien, más que en el ámbito de la construcción, las piezas, piedras y ladrillos, pueden ser o de canteras internas o de procedencia extranjera. En esto, menos en el ámbito de la albañilería que en los constructos lingüísticos.

These countries share cultural similarities in terms of religion, language, and norms due to their Romance-speaking background. Being Mediterranean countries (with the exception of Brazil), some common political concerns such as overseas immigration, deindustrialization and globalization have given rise to populist movements, which motivates the study of their expressions in the politics and the media. Brazil, though outside Europe, shares many of the above-mentioned values and issues, offering a unique Lusophonic and Latin American perspective on populism, driven by disparities, strong leaders, and corruption. The chapters analyze the strategies of populist leaders and the role of social media in spreading information and disinformation and provide an overview of emerging populism and its interaction with social media.

Le système littéraire francophone constitue un ensemble littéraire diversifié mais sa visibilité en est encore très réduite. Les littératures francophones sont indéniablement filtrées, sévèrement sélectionnées, partiellement commentées et irrévocablement réduites à une poignée d’écrivains ou d’œuvres en circulation lorsqu’on examine le transfert des littératures francophones vers le centre parisien. Mais, quelles sont les pratiques à l’œuvre dans le transfert littéraire des littératures francophones vers la périphérie? La présente étude prend son point de départ dans la circulation de la littérature entre périphéries et étudie les échanges entre les espaces littéraires francophones et l’espace littéraire scandinave semi-périphérique non francophone, plus spécifiquement la Suède. En procédant à l’examen du transfert littéraire à trois niveaux différents (macro-, méso- et microscopique), ce livre analyse les flux de traduction et de réception, les pratiques des médiateurs (journalistes et traducteurs) et la critique métalittéraire. En conclusion, cette étude réussit à dégager un ensemble de pratiques de sélection, de médiation et de lecture à travers lesquelles la Suède a su négocier d’une part son propre positionnement et, de l’autre, celui des littératures francophones et inévitablement celui de l’Hexagone.

This volume deals with the pragmatic dimension of negations and is oriented towards empirical studies of negatives’ meanings and functions in media and public discourses.
By bringing together scholars from different countries, with studies on different languages this volume aims to shed light and contribute to new knowledge about the forms and functionality of negation as an universal phenomenon. Linguists and pragmaticiens generally agree that the use of negatives escapes logic and pure semantic description and is therefore best analysed with tools from cognitive and pragmatic theories.
Based on hypotheses within pragmatics, semantics and discourse analysis, the main assumption is here that forms of expressing negatives emerge and adjust constantly and in accordance with the cultural domain and the social setting of their appearance. This is why this volume focuses on the functions of negative expressions in specific domains and types of discourses.

The authors of this edited volume focus on the emergence of populist discourses, coming from movements or parties from Romance-speaking countries in Europe and in Latin America. By combining linguistics, social and political sciences in a discourse analytical approach, the sixteen papers enlighten the mechanisms behind populist discourses yielding from different socio-cultural and political contexts. The common denominator of the studies is the focus on the discursive and rhetorical characteristics of recently emerged movements of populism in both continents. Investigating expressions of these political movements is highly relevant in today’s society, where the growing number of populist discourses has become a pre-eminent issue, alongside people’s increasing insecurity regarding future political and environmental challenges. L´ouvrage revient sur la génèse des institutions de la Francophonie au moment des indépendances des pays africains dans les années 1960. En s´appuyant sur une analyse géopolitique et sur les théories postcoloniales, l´auteur réévalue le positionnement de la France qui officiellement prend ses distances avec cette organisation multilatérale pour mieux la contrôler dans les années 1980 lorsque la Francophonie augmente sa capacité politique à intervenir sur les grandes questions internationales. En confrontant l´esprit des structures aux acteurs de la Francophonie, l´ouvrage évalue les défis et la difficulté à cerner les domaines d´action spécifiques de cette organisation. Plus fondamentalement, cet ouvrage propose une analyse critique du discours francophone construit autour d´une idéologie qui fait de la langue française un instrument pétri de valeurs et de normes.

The book studies the genesis of the institutions of the Francophonie at the time of independence of African countries in the sixties. Based on geopolitical analysis and postcolonial theories, the author reassesses the position of France which officially distanced itself from this multilateral organization. France controlled more and more the organization in the 1980s when the organization increased its political expression on international issues. By confronting the spirit of the structures with the actors of the Francophonie, the work reflects on the challenges and the difficulty to define the specific fields of action of this organization. Furthermore, the book proposes a critical analysis of the francophone discourse based on the ideology that makes the French language an instrument containing values and norms.

Denna bok behandlar kulturella relationer mellan Frankrike och Sverige från 1945 till våra dagar. De olika artiklarna bygger på den forskning som presenterades på den internationella konferensen ”Frankrike-Sverige – Tur och retur” i Stockholm i januari 2014. Konferensen organiserades av Sorbonne-universitetet i Paris och Stockholms universitet. De tjugotvå bidragen ger tillsammans en bild av de komplexa och rörliga samband och kontaktpunkter som genom historien uppstått mellan de båda länderna. Tre huvudsakliga fält har identifierats där kulturella identiteter skapats över nationsgränserna: representationer och föreställningsvärldar; mediering och förmedling; översättning, mottagande och cirkulering av verk.

Festival Romanistica is an edited volume with 19 contributions written in four Romance languages: French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. The volume represents the whole range of research areas in Romance Linguistics today at the University of Stockholm: semantics, syntax, pragmatics, discourse analysis, diachronic linguistics, translation studies and second language acquisition and use. Five of the articles are written by renowned scholars from five European universities. The authors of the remaining 14 contributions are doctors and supervisors belonging to the National Doctoral Program in Romance Languages (FoRom). By virtue of its wide scope and the high quality of its contributions, this volume is of interest for, and will find a natural audience among, researchers of all Romance Languages departments and divisions in Scandinavia, Europe and worldwide.

Gunnel Engwall is Professor of Romance Languages, especially French, at Stockholm University. She has been Vice-Chancellor of Stockholm University and President of the Academy of Letters, Antiquity and History and is presently the Head of the National Edition of August Strindberg’s Collected Works.
Lars Fant is Professor emeritus of Romance Languages, especially Spanish and Portuguese, at Stockholm University. He is the also Chief Editor of the series Stockholm Studies in Romance Languages.
